Michael Vaughan predicts the next England captain in the shortest format
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has picked his choice for the next skipper of the English side in the shortest format. The cricketer-turned-commentator has gone with explosive batter Jos Buttler to be the next captain of England in the T20s.
Notably, Buttler is currently in India, plying his trade for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The RR batter is having a spectacular time in the fifteenth season of the cash-rich league.
Buttler is currently the orange cap holder in IPL 2022, smashing 491 runs already in just seven matches. The Somerset cricketer has smashed as many as three centuries and a couple of fifties in the ongoing season at a jaw-dropping average of 81.83.
Vaughan reckoned that Buttler is the best T20 player in the world at present, and he wasn’t surprised when the Royals had retained the 31-year-old ahead of the mega-auctions of IPL 2022, held earlier this year.
“Jos Buttler, the best T20 player in the world. It’s a no-brainer. Soon as you get the chance to retain someone like Buttler, you do it. You stick him to the top of the order, and you watch him flourish. His form, expertise, power, skills are just getting better and better,” said Vaughan on ESPNcricinfo.
Vaughan further mentioned that he doesn’t expect Buttler to feature in England’s Test team again before adding that the wicketkeeper-batter could lead the English team in the shortest format.
“I don’t see him playing Test cricket anymore. I think he’s just going to be a white-ball specialist. And I still think he can improve. He will be the England captain in T20s; I don’t think it could be too far away. If not for this World Cup, definitely for the next one. He’s that sort of a cricketer,” added Vaughan.
