Former India icon Sunil Gavaskar chastised England and Mumbai Indians pacer Jofra Archer for leaving his team in the middle of the IPL 2023.

Archer, who played just five matches for MI this year, suffered a recurrence of the elbow ailment that forced him to miss nearly eight months of cricket and exited the IPL on May 9 before MI could complete their season.

Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a severe setback when speedster Jofra Archer was disqualified from the IPL 2023 season earlier this month. For the Rohit Sharma-led team, Archer played in just five games and took just two wickets at a 9.50 economy rate. He is now also out of the 2018 English summer and will miss the Ashes in 2023 due to the return of a stress fracture in his right elbow.

With the MI jersey on, Archer had a lot of expectations. The 28-year-old never seemed to be in his element in IPL 2023 after making his return to international cricket early this year after nearly 24 months. He was not bowling quickly or looking menacing with the ball.

“What has been Mumbai’s experience of Jofra Archer?”- Sunil Gavaskar

Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has smacked Archer left, right, and centre since his return home, as the England Cricket Board (ECB) monitors his recuperation.

“What has been Mumbai Indian’s experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season.

“They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn’t seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realized when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace.

“In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country’s cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit but still came over.

“If he was committed to the franchise, which probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn’t going to play, and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Archer’s career has been hampered by injuries. After playing in England’s first ODI World Cup campaign in 2019, his graph has only gotten worse. A stress fracture to his right elbow halted his progress in 2021, followed by a stress fracture to his spine the following year.
