IPL 2022: Matthew Wade chided for his bat smashing, helmet throwing act after the controversial dismissal
Gujarat Titans‘ opening batsman Matthew Wade has been reprimanded by the match referee for his outburst after being dismissed in the Thursday night fixture against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The two sides met during Match 67 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, where the Challengers kept their playoffs hopes alive after a commanding win with Virat Kohli top-scoring in a clinical chase.
The game, however, was hit by a major controversy involving out-of-form Australian World Cup hero Wade. The left-handed batter, who had just 114 runs at 14.25 with a top score of 30, needed a score for his side but was denied by the controversial DRS decision on 16.
Wade was given out lbw off Glenn Maxwell‘s delivery that hit his pads. He immediately reviewed the decision, but despite replays showing a clear deflection, the ultra edge remained unmoved, and the umpire’s initial on-field decision of ‘out’ remained.
No wonder Wade looked absolute devastated that the technology didn’t back him up. The Aussie walked off shaking his head, and upon reaching the dressing room, he was seen angrily throwing his bat and helmet around.
After the match, the Hobart-born cricketer admitted to the offence and was let off with a reprimand. According to a statement from the IPL, it was a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct.
“Matthew Wade from Gujarat TItans has been reprimanded for breaching the TATA Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Mr Wade admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” read the statement.
