Ricky Ponting’s statement suggests that the conditions in England for the ICC World Test Championship Final would be more favourable for the Australian cricket team compared to the Indian team. As a former Australian cricket captain and one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the sport, Ponting’s opinion carries weight due to his extensive experience and knowledge.

There are just a little more than 20 days until the second World Test Championship final between Australia and India, which will be held at The Oval from June 7–11.

England is recognized for its swing and seam-friendly weather, with cloudy sky and dampness in the pitches assisting fast bowlers. Historically, Australian teams have flourished in these conditions due to their fast bowling strength and ability to exploit movement off the pitch. Furthermore, the Australian side features a formidable batting lineup that can adapt well to adverse situations.

The Indian squad, on the other side, has typically struggled in England, particularly in Tests, because of the distinct type of surfaces and the swing bowling challenge. While the Indian squad has made significant progress in recent years, notably a historic Test series win in Australia in 2020-2021, playing in England remains a daunting job for any visiting team.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes the conditions in England will favour Pat Cummins and his team against Rohit Sharma and his team.

“If you look at it just from a conditions point of view only, you would think that the conditions in England should suit Australia a little bit more, as the English conditions are definitely more like Australia than what they are in India, especially on what we’ve seen the last few times in Australia,” Ricky Ponting said.

“I’ve actually been to India and played Test cricket here. We’ve seen the wickets and they’ve played on, which have been very spin-friendly wickets and surroundings have always been difficult to play on. But I thought the comeback shown by Australia in the last two Test matches was really pleasing,” said Ricky Ponting at the official curtain raiser event of the WTC Final on Friday.

“Indian players playing in the IPL won’t be thinking about it”- Ricky Ponting

Ponting believes it shouldn’t have an impact on India’s preparations for the eagerly anticipated WTC final, which will take place in England ten days after the IPL 2023 concludes on May 28.

“There are two ways to look at it. For someone like Virat (Kohli), is he better off playing and scoring runs on a consistent basis and have confidence going into a game? The Australian bowlers back home haven’t played much cricket. So, they will be immensely prepared with runs under their belt and there are both ways to look at it,” he added.

“Mohammed Shami will be better skill-wise than Pat Cummins is as the latter hasn’t played any cricket for a few months now. A lot of it comes down to the individual.

“Indian players playing in the IPL won’t be thinking about it; they will be on workload management stuff to ensure they will be fine to bowl in a Test match in a couple of weeks’ time,” he asserted.
